StarHub and IAHGames score with launch of StarHub Cup Singapore

Singapore’s fully-integrated info-communication company brings the Singapore Finals of One Asia Cup to fans on their mobile phones for free

27 August 2009, Singapore – Regional online games operator and publisher, IAHGames, is proud to partner StarHub for the launch of the StarHub Cup Singapore, which will serve as the Singapore Finals of One Asia Cup 2009, one of Asia’s biggest cyber gaming tournaments.

The StarHub Cup Singapore will see 64 participants from across the island come together on September 17 and 18, 2009, to compete against each other on the EA SPORTS™ FIFA Online 2 platform. 12 winners from the various categories of the StarHub Cup Singapore will stand to win up to SGD7000 in cash and prizes, where the top 6 will move on to represent Singapore at the inaugural One Asia Cup on September 19 , 2009 to vie for the largest regional prize pool with other leading players from Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

The excitement, however, will not be limited to just the players and their spectators. In an unprecedented move locally, highlights of the StarHub Cup Singapore and the regional finals of One Asia Cup will be available for viewing to StarHub Mobile 3G subscribers for free, using compatible 3G mobile handsets.

This is the first time where highlights of a cyber gaming tournament will be available for download on mobile phones across the island, catering to fans who are unable to make it down to the Games Convention Asia 2009 (GCA) at Suntec City, where both the StarHub Cup Singapore and One Asia Cup will be held. Broadcast of cyber gaming tournaments to mobile customers is a regular feature in cyber game-mad countries like Korea.

“StarHub’s innovation and support for the gaming community are strongly exemplified through their title sponsorship of our Singapore Finals. At IAHGames, we strive to take on a leadership role by creating a world class gaming experience to gamers all across South East Asia. This is only possible with partners such as StarHub, who is not only engaged with the cyber gaming industry, but also backed the One Asia Cup with their technological infrastructure,” said Yeo Yeok Chuan, Vice President (Marketing & Strategy) of IAHGames.

“At StarHub, we pride ourselves in delivering the best possible services and experiences to our customer. We are excited to be part of the cyber gaming landscape in Singapore and give aspiring gamers a chance to represent their country on a wider stage,” said Iris Wee, Head of Marketing at StarHub. “Beyond this, we are also delighted to enhance our 3G mobile customers’ experience with additional value-added mobile TV content. The highlights of the StarHub Cup Singapore tournament expands our mobile TV programme line-up to14 streamed channels and 5 video-on-demand channels, providing our 3G mobile customers with the most comprehensive range of mobile TV programmes ever in Singapore,” added Wee.

In addition to mobile telecast, StarHub will also freely provide clips of the tournament for post-paid MaxOnline customers via StarHub TV Online on Demand, complementing its already high-quality range of streamed and downloadable online content.

The qualifiers for the StarHub Cup Singapore have been ongoing since July both online and offline at various cybercafé locations across Singapore. They include qualifiers at 4 tertiary institutions, namely Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University. This further epitomizes IAHGames’ mission to involve a wider audience to have a chance to compete on a cyber games stage.

“The beauty of both football and EA SPORTS™ FIFA Online 2 is the ease of accessibility for both casual and hardcore gamers, as well as serious sportsmen and armchair footballers alike in Singapore. The response for the qualifiers from all walks of life has been tremendous, as everyone who takes part stands a chance of winning something, not just the seriously competitive gamers,” observed Mr Yeo of IAHGames.

The One Asia Cup will be offering one of Asia’s largest prize purses with the eventual winner walking away with cash and prizes of at least US$15,000. The tournament’s US$100,000 prize structure also makes One Asia Cup one of the largest cyber gaming tournaments in Asia in terms of prizes.

Across the four countries, EA SPORTS™ FIFA Online 2 has attracted 20 million gamers since its open beta launch last year, making it one of the most popular online games in South East Asia.

EA SPORTS™ FIFA Online 2 is the latest blockbuster title from IAHGames, based on the massively popular FIFA series of football games. It is free-to-play and recently went commercial, having enjoyed a very successful beta phase.
