Two months ago, we reviewed the pilot episode of Being Human, a novel retelling of the buddy classic with vampires, ghosts and werewolves thrown into the mix. Is it any surprise that we’d be back for Round 2?

Season 1 left the perpetually sulky Mitchell (Aidan Turner), insecure George (Russell Tovey) and neurotic Annie (Leonora Crichlow) struggling with the fallout from their confrontation with big bad evil vamp-guy Herrick. Sure, the threat of vampire world domination might have gone up in smoke, but as they attempt to put some semblance of order back into their (un)lives, it becomes increasingly evident that there’s still plenty of melodrama to milk from this franchise.

Two guys and a couch, wut~? Despite the semblance of normality,
we know the lives of Mitchell (left) and George (right) are anything but

Fresh trouble comes in the form of Professor Jaggat (Lyndsey Marshall), a pseudo-scientist playing at God, and Kemp (Donald Sumpter), a religious zealot with a big axe to grind. These new antagonists are part of an underground organization dedicated to weeding out supernaturals in Bristol, and it’s clear from Day 1 that they’ve got a nasty surprise planned for our "happy three friends”.

Of course Mitchell, George and Annie have their own individual problems to contend with, and these will be the crux of Season 2. With vampire society thrown into disarray after Herrick’s fatal decapitation, tall, dark and broodsome has to step up to the plate as the new leader of Bristol’s bloodsuckers. George, on the other hand, has to contend with relationship troubles, and Annie walks into a bar. Yes. I’m dead serious here.

Is that a hint of romance I detect?

While Season 2’s pilot starts off slow, the action escalates really quickly. There’s plenty of foreshadowing, and clever screenwriting ensures that there’s always a new development just waiting to happen, or a *gasp* plot hook round the corner. There’s also ample exposition – enough for brand new viewers not to feel left out.

And who can forget the witty banter, dry humor and wicked in-jokes that characterize this series? These tidbits are sprinkled liberally throughout each hour-long episode, and they make all the difference, elevating the show from humdrum to heavenly.

So if you’ve been following this series, then Season 2’s a definite must-watch. If you’re new though, fret not. You’ll feel the urge to bite soon enough.

Being Human (Season 2) will air every Tuesday from Dec 14 at 9pm, exclusively on AXN Beyond (StarHub Channel 525). For more details, visit: www.axnbeyond.com/shows/being-human
