Greetings and welcome young one, to another session of Syprux’s Tech News. Now, sit down and make yourself comfortable on the couch there. No, don’t worry about the straps. They’re there for your...erm... safety! Yes! Lie down, get comfy while I tie you down, I mean, gently fasten you onto to seat so that you’d be safe as I attempt to, urm, diagnose your condition! Of course I know what I’m doing.
Now lie back, and relax as I give you a nice dose of Taco injection of the news...

Well, ladies and gentlemen, it is official now. Jailbreaking. No, not the kind where you bust out of prison. That is still illegal, and probably not very encouraged.

I’m talking about “jailbreaking” your smart phone (more specially, the Apple iPhone). Recently, the US Copyright Office passed a ruling that jailbreaking the iPhone – other any other mobile devices for that matter – is longer an action that is deemed a violation of US federal copyright law. The US Copyright Office ruled that overriding a manufacturer’s protection mechanism in order to allow the handset to load and execute software applications is, in fact, non infringement of the law. In other words, go ahead and jailbreak that phone! It’s perfectly endorsed by the government, as politically incorrect that sounds.

Thumbs up endorsement! Source: 20th Century Fox
Before I get ahead of myself, let me explain a bit what the term 'jailbreak' means for the benefit of readers who are, for the first time, in touch with the Internet. Apple (the company, not the fruit) sells their iPhones (and iPad, and iPod, and iKan) with a built-in restriction, which prevents you from acquiring and loading applications that are not obtained through the iPhone Application Store. It’s like you buying a frying pan from *insert supermarket brand name*, and you can only fry fish bought from the very same supermarket.

This is not funny. Source: www.safetybriefs.org
'Jailbreak' is the act of using software modifications to remove the above-mentioned restrictions from your iPhone, thus enabling you to load and experience applications from other 3rd party developers not endorsed by Apple. Aptly named indeed. With jailbreak, users are given a choice as how they wish to obtain their applications, instead of merely relying to what Apple wishes to sell.

Like that, except with less tattoos Source: 20th Century Fox
Naturally, Apple welcomes the decision to legalize jailbreak with open arms and big smiles. Right. They are very much against the ruling, insisting that jailbreak can “severely degrade the great iPhone experience”. The last time I checked, not using supermarket brand fish for my supermarket-bought frying pan “degrades my great dinner cooking experience”. Keep in mind, though, that you would have to jailbreak your iPhone each time Apple comes up with an Operating System (iOS) update – but I guess you jailbreakers already know that, yea?

For less depressing news, I assume all you readers have heard of a rather obscure website called YouTube, yes? Recently YouTube announced that they are increasing the user video upload limitation from 10 to 15 minutes, as published on their blog.

Maybe you've heard of it Source: www.youtube.com
Users rejoice! Now you can upload longer videos of you doing things that probably nobody would ever watch. Way to go! This improvement by YouTube has far more important benefits however. People who watch movies on YouTube would now have their movies split into lesser parts, which translates into lesser streaming time! Hoorah for cheapskate movie watchers!
Well, that ends the therapy session for today. Back to you, Cloud of Darkness. |
